About the Awards
The first week of June every year marks Volunteers’ Week, a chance to celebrate and say thank you for the fantastic contribution millions of volunteers make across the UK. For 2019 YMCA Scarborough is working together with Voluntary and Community Sector organisations across Scarborough and Ryedale to recognise and celebrate the phenomenal work that goes on in the region, without which we would all be poorer.
There will be a night of awards and celebration in the YMCA Theatre on June 5th where members of our communities will be recognised for their contributions across twelve award areas. It promises to be a fantastic night and will be made all the more special by the people winning the awards and their stories.
The award categories are:-
- Youth Champion
- Fundraiser of the Year
- Trustee / Board Member of the Year
- Campaigning and Awareness Raising Champion
- Pioneer of the Year
- Best Neighbourhood Volunteer
- Environmental Hero
- New Project of the Year
- Spotlight Award
- Community Organisation of the Year
- The Venerable Volunteer
- Inspirational Volunteer
Three of the categories and all were successful.
Spotlight Award (focused on a particular theme that’s important in our community today. This year’s theme is Work to Reduce Loneliness and Social Isolation) – the Whitby and Staithes Area Sheds
New Project of the Year (something fresh and new which has started since January 2018. A group or activity which is having a big impact on its beneficiaries) – Kidz Making Good ( Eskmouth Scouts, Eskdale Secondary School and Sleights Primary School)
Pioneer of the Year ( a volunteers who has taken a leap into the unknown, used creativity and innovation to bring about change in the community) – Graham Storer
We congratulate Whitby Beach Sweep and Whitby Boxing Club who also have awards in our area. We congratulate other winners and the many other projects nominated. All volunteer efforts (and those led by agencies) are essential to community well-being in Whitby, Scarborough and Rydale.
In this Volunteer Week we pat ourselves AND OTHERS on the heads:-)
These are ALL team awards. None of this could be achieved without extraordinary work by many ordinary people – simply working and trusting together.
We are typical of many other projects and initiatives with volunteers giving time to each other for the benefit of people in our region young and old!!
