Sheds help out with Zoom workshops in woodwork

Children and Young people have had a difficult time with disrupted schooling for many months. We wanted to offer them something to enjoy in the Easter break and we’ve worked with North Yorkshire Youth and a representative of the youth sub-committee of Whitby and District Rotary Club to put a programme together for 8 – 13 year olds.

Young people's Easter activities1

We are delivering workshops on bird boxes and rustic stick chairs, quite challenging to do at a distance with Zoom. There have been enthusiastic local community volunteers to lead other workshops. Kits are being put together  that include the majority of the materials needed which are being given to the youngsters.

A video was recorded just before Easter involving SAMS Shed.  It is for a feature by NYCC on Sleights. Three Shedders (Bob, Eddie & Graham convened with face masks and social distanced).

Here is the piece written for the Whitby Gazette with a collage of all that went on.

“What did you do in the Easter holidays?”, the teacher might well ask.
Several youngsters in Whitby district might reply they had made a felt hen, a brownie cake, a bird box, a sausage bake, a rustic chair or a piece of felt artwork.
These were the six activities organised for young people on Zoom, each led by a volunteer from the Whitby community, aided by the helping hands of parents too.
Doing such workshops with youngsters at home over Zoom presents some interesting challenges all round, not least with the technology.
However, gremlins were overcome and each one of the workshops ended up as “mission accomplished”.
Thanks to Whitby District Sheds, Whitby & District Rotary Club and North Yorkshire Youth for pulling this together.

What did parents say?

Thank you again to You and all the Rotary Club members, the events E attended were superb, so well organised and thought out, and presented brilliantly by Zoom. We really do appreciate all the time involved.   L&E

Many thanks to all involved for the Zooms they were really enjoyed.  S&O

Many thanks for all the fantastic activities over Easter. M and V have really enjoyed them.   R&M&V

We have had a fantastic time on all sessions. E and I acquired new skills and confidence. Most of all we engaged together and met new people. You have all done an amazing job. The most influential was the cooking a meal as E ate new foods and now helps me prepare tea.   V&E
