Happy New Year 2024

The Sheds are back up running after a slower time over Christmas

Jim at Staithes says,” Happy New Year to all shedders ……”

The finished product. A rightly proud Shed!

Here at Staithes we’ve had more progress on the greenhouse ……and today ( New Year’s Day ) ……” drum roll “ …the door is finally on …..the work bench on the back wall is ready for the top , plus shelving …..in fact we are now good to go for planting etc etc ….in addition we installed a drip rail above the door

Which drip is the rail for? RHS?

…in the photo you can see Ken holding the drip rail

……apologies can’t type a long ups date as iPad keyboard has such a long lag on it when typing…..it’s a nuisance….

Regards…Jim

Rob has penned a recollection of how Whitby Shed worked for him 4 years ago and how it still works for him and indeed others. Simple friendships made.

As I approach my fourth year at the shed I have been reflecting on why it was not just good…but so good.
I am once again reminded of my first day and what it took to become a card carrying Shedder!

1/ First Impression
I was initially overwhelmed by the vibrant, active, creative and fun atmosphere. Norm was making his wooden automaton models, Lance was discussing photography. Tony and Ray were woodworking. Ted was repairing something. The craft table was buzzing with Katie, Maeb and others creatively absorbed. Then there was a new ‘delicate’ man being introduced to woodwork by Graham. I also heard that there had recently been an outing to an art exhibition. Some vitality!
2/ Personal Validation
Graham and I had spoken previously and was therefore aware of my electrical engineering background. He pointed to a stack of LED light fittings and suggested that if I had nothing else planned I could upgrade the lighting. Work commenced and I very soon felt valued and a part of it all.
3 / Follow Through
I have a lot to thank Norm for (sadly he moved away). He introduced me to some of the other Shedders and at the end of the first session and suggested we go for  a coffee to continue chatting. A few days later he phoned me to see if I had enjoyed the day and if I was going next time. Graham also phoned for my feedback – we had quite a long chat!

Those three steps got me to where I am now. It has been a bit quieter at Whitby Shed recently but I feel  we have the potential to get back to where we were. Using the working title of Shed Plus (where the Plus includes The Doing Place and the associated Krampus arts  project) we can extend to new interests, extra curricular activities and of course to network with our other Sheds and the local community.

Onwards and Upwards

Looks like Rob’s reflection has born early fruit as he reports on the first Wednesday morning of 2024
Rob reporting, Wednesday 3rd January

I picked Marie up this morning and she was pleased to be back at “the family”.
A new comer Isaac (a work friend of Aidan’s) came along and brought his woodcarving equipment. He carved wooden mushrooms and figures. He seemed to fit in well!
Tony has bought a new ‘bean to cup’ coffee machine and has donated us his old one. It needs a new grinder motor which we have ordered online.  Aidan will install. More mending stuff for us!
Gardening is planned for Marie and Bryn! Bryn will make planters for Marie to fill. We will put a couple outside the front door of the Hall  and plan to make some seed trays for Staithes greenhouse. Parkol Marine are going to deliver some pallets to enable this.
Ray returned and started work on his shoe rack!
Briefly spoke about the Shed Plus concept and it was very well received by all.
The Coronet Lathe is now on Ebay! Here’s hoping.

Please have a mince pie

Isaac carving out his place!

Isaac’s mini tool kit, the plane is 2 inches long.

Aiden starts work on the coffee machine.

and Aidan does wood turning; he is a tip top turner!

Staithes Shed goes to seed

Well goes to planting seeds soon.

On 8th Jim was busy progressing the workbench and shelves in the rear of the greenhouse and Brian was busy on the lathe turning a door handle …and it’s a good looking handle …

in the photo you can see the workbench and Brian carrying out an inspection of said bench …..judging by the look on his face I think it got a thumbs up ……all ready for seed trays …..

Fabulous. The staging I mean.
