A Look Across the Shed Family in Whitby District and Norton-on-Tees

These are exciting times across our Sheds.

BayThorpe Shed has just celebrated its acquisition of the former Scout Hut in Robin Hood’s Bay.  Whitby Shed recently had a visitation from two of North Yorkshire Council’s community development team and a fabulous round table consultation involving all the Shedders expressing their (positive) views of the Whitby Shed. Staithes had a very successful growing season in their hand crafted greenhouse with new members too. Norton Shed is thriving too and introducing a fourth morning for cancer diagnosed people (in conjunction with the local Social Prescribing Link Workers).

But what is most of note at ALL the Sheds is the camaraderie with everyone contributing to making the Sheds successful in their unique ways. At Norton Shed – way across the Moor – there is acknowledgement that their success is on the shoulders of what the Whitby District Sheds have learnt tracing back to the Sleights Shed (in Littlebeck) way back in 2016. It is approaching 9 years now since the first Shed was planted.

How many men (and indeed women) have been helped by the Sheds. At Norton we estimate the last nearly 3 years has seen 40 people helped. Across the nearly 9 years of our Sheds the number in total must be 250 or more. It is amazing what good something as simple as getting together and working (or watching others work!) achieves.

At Norton there is a small sign that says “I am in the Shed”.  One of the Shedders has been asked to make another sign that says “I am the Shed”.

Last week it so happens Graham visited all the Sheds during the course of 3 days. Below are some photos he took to give us all a window on the Sheds.  We hope to organise a Shed Jamboree in Whitby in a few week’s time for Shedders to meet up and share our experiences and some of our plans.

An update from Jim@Staithes

It’s been a busy few months at the Staithes Shed , we’ve welcomed new members John and Vic ….we are starting to implement a better ventilation system for our wood working machines …. We also made a table top for our landlord’s pool table so drinks can be served on it , they were very pleased with it ….the main design was Ken’s and he kept us right all the way through the construction process.

We’ve made new interior sign posts for the Staithes museum that direct visitors around the building…..in addition we made and installed outside signs for the museum and in the attached photographs you can see Ken and Vic ( plus Jim the labourer ) with the signs all in place thanks to Ken and Vic …

It’s great to see Malcolm and Phill both on the road to recovery and getting involved in the workshop ventilation project …. John has kindly donated a number of tools that were his Fathers so hopefully we can put such a poignant donation to good use … The first growing season for the greenhouse has gone well , Liz has done a great job here and already making plans for next year ….

I’ve attached a few photographs of the museum signs plus many of the shedders enjoying a cuppa and a natter ….of course the cuppa was made as always by Brian to his usual high standards …in fact he has been recently promoted and is now our Chief Executive Tea Boy …a role he is excelling at …..

Also , advanced notice to Shedders at RH Bay and Whitby, we are planning our Anti Christmas buffet and the Secret Santa of Tat ..I think you all know the format ..it’s our small way of recognising that for many Christmas can be a sad , lonely and reflective time of year so we hope this adds a bit of light relief …so if you fancy bringing a bite to eat plus ( and this is the only guide , a piece of Tat for the secret Santa ) then pop along , we’ll send the date later ……hopefully we’ll have a bit of a laugh with fellow Shedders that share some of the battle scars that life throws at us …….

See you soon…..  Jim
